The City of Hiroshima is internationally known as a symbol of recovery and peace. As the name PEACE ARCH HIROSHIMA indicates, Hiroshima would like to become an arch that connects information, people and the world with a resilient force like an arch-shaped bow. Through this project, Hiroshima will aim to be a leader in sending the message about the need for a globally linked sustainable society that presents a new way of living based on true peace and a new vision for designing society in order to preserve the future of all mankind. And to make world peace truly happen, Hiroshima seeks to become an “International Peace Hub” that promotes world peace by connecting people around the world, encouraging people to think together about common issues and creating a global community for peace.
FEEL the world
What makes people around the world happy? What problems do they face? What do they hope for?
We can see what is happening around the world through the Internet and on TV. But perhaps what we see is only part of the story. We may not realize what the real problems are or what people are really hoping for.
What are their lives like and what are their problems and hopes? Before we think and talk about peace, we must first establish a personal connection with people around the world by understanding and sympathizing with their lives and problems.
In other words, we must FEEL.
THINK broadly about peace
Is peace a world without war or conflict? What is the biggest threat to peace today? The increasing frequency of natural disasters? Environmental destruction on a global scale? That’s not all. There are also problems like poverty, famine and plagues. What else? It has been almost 70 years since the end of the Second World War and the atomic bomb.
Those of us living in Japan today take peace for granted, but we are also learning that peace is very fragile. What is true peace and how can we eliminate the threats to peace? And how can people continue living in peace? What is the ideal society of the future? These are questions that we, together with others around the world, must THINK about with a broad perspective.
ACT from Hiroshima
What actions can we take to bring peace into our lives? Instead of merely thinking about peace and the way society should be, what practical actions can be taken? Some things are beyond the power of a single individual, but imagine what can be accomplished when people join hands together. And what kind of energy will emerge when we act for peace?
The world today is intricately connected. The mechanisms sustaining the global environment the interdependent relationships controlling world economies, information networks which are drastically changing society and communication... The connections linking our world are now more diverse and complicated than ever before. So much so that we will have to change the present state of our actions towards peace.
Now is the time for Hiroshima, a symbol of recovery and peace, to take stronger action for peace. There must be new ways and means to promote peace in today’s modern society. That is why Hiroshima is determined to act now.
Natural disasters, environmental destruction, famine, poverty, plague and conflicts… The increasingly diversified events that are occurring at a global level are threatening our peace and creating problems around the world. These problems cannot be dismissed as local issues as they affect our entire planet.
Japan is no exception. What happened in Japan moved people all over the world to lend support, and it affected industries and societies and people’s emotions and values. What happens in one part of the world affects other areas in different ways.
To maintain peace in a world that is becoming increasingly complex, it is essential to establish a new global bond that goes beyond current relationships between states or individuals.
We would strongly like to send our hope for peace and recovery on a path far and beyond.
This project will deliver a message around the world and spread hope with the great strength of an archer’s bow. Moreover, at times, it becomes a bridge shaped like an arch to connect information and people to people. By these kinds of actions – spreading generosity and sympathy for others – before long, the world will become one. At that time, a new foundation for society, where people can see a new hope for peace and recovery, will be created.
This project was born based on the ideas like these.
The arch and bridge become a motif for the logo design. Building bridges and deepening bonds between people symbolize the action of this program itself. Besides, the logo stands for the top part of “a heart” and “the heads of two people” when they meet, and it has a naturally created "look."
By finding new values and hope in each other’s heart and understanding each other, the things we could obtain become greater.
As far as interpersonal encounters go, 1 + 1 is not simply 2.
Having hope for a great potential – which can be created from this project – and wishes that I would like to spread around the world, I present this title.
